Affective Realism

Interoceptive predictions infuse every perception, making the body's current emotional state appear to be a property of the world — causing feelings to be experienced as facts rather than as predictions generated from within.

What the science says

The term is introduced by Barrett, Quigley & Hamilton (2016) to name a consequence of the predictive coding architecture of the brain. Because the visceromotor and interoceptive system is the most agranular — the origin point of the brain's predictive cascade — interoceptive predictions infuse every sensory prediction before it reaches awareness. Every act of perception, cognition, or social evaluation already contains a signal about the body's current allostatic state: pleasant or unpleasant, high or low arousal, efficient or depleted.

The result is that the felt quality of experience — whether something seems good or bad, safe or threatening, interesting or dull — is partly constituted by the body's current physiological state, not solely by the properties of whatever is being perceived. The body's affective tone gets projected onto the world as if it were a fact about the world. "Food is 'delicious' or 'distasteful.' People are 'nice' or 'mean.'" (Barrett et al., 2016)

This is not a cognitive bias in the usual sense, and it is not a failure of rationality. It is the normal operation of an architecture whose primary job is allostatic regulation. The interoceptive signal is real information — the body's current state is genuinely relevant to how the person should respond to any situation. The distortion arises when the signal is treated as an objective property of the external world rather than recognized as a property of the current body-world relation.

The organizational implication is direct. Organizational conflict is frequently mediated by affective realism. A manager who is sleep-deprived and running an allostatic deficit doesn't experience her report as "objectively difficult" — she experiences difficulty as a felt quality of the report, as real as the report's name. A team in a sustained high-pressure quarter doesn't perceive their colleagues as "more aggressive than usual" — they perceive their colleagues as aggressive, as a matter of apparent fact. The disagreement doesn't feel like a difference in body state; it feels like a difference in reality.

The practical corrective is interoceptive awareness — not as a therapeutic practice but as an epistemic one. Noticing the body's current state as the body's current state (rather than as a fact about the world) interrupts the automaticity of affective realism without eliminating the useful signal the body is providing.

The relationship to allostatic depletion: Affective realism is present in every state, but it becomes entrenched and difficult to correct when the body budget is persistently depleted. In depression, Barrett et al. (2016) describe a "vicious cycle": pervasive negative affect (reflecting metabolic inefficiency) is experienced via affective realism as the world being inherently negative, which in turn generates more negative predictions, further degrading the efficiency of the internal model. The mechanism is not purely psychological; it is a self-reinforcing computational loop.


What the evidence does NOT support

  • That the body's felt sense is always wrong. Interoceptive signals are real information about the body's state and often track real features of the environment. A felt sense of threat sometimes reflects a genuine threat. Affective realism is not an argument for ignoring the body's signals — it is an argument for not automatically treating them as objective facts about external reality.
  • That affective realism can be fully corrected by cognitive effort. Because the interoceptive infusion happens before conscious deliberation, willpower-based corrections have limited reach. The more effective lever is upstream: addressing the body state itself (sleep, physical activity, allostatic recovery) rather than trying to override the signal in the moment.
  • That this is a well-validated named construct with an independent empirical literature. "Affective realism" as a specific labeled concept is relatively new. The underlying mechanism (interoceptive influence on perception and judgment) has a substantial supporting literature; the specific term and its framing are still gaining empirical traction.

Buddhist parallel

The Buddhist analysis of vedanā maps closely onto affective realism at the functional level. Vedanā — the pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral hedonic tone arising with every moment of sensory contact — is precisely the interoceptive coloring that Barrett et al. describe. The Buddha identified vedanā as the root of automatic reactivity: pleasant vedanā produces craving, unpleasant vedanā produces aversion, and the whole process unfolds before conceptual elaboration begins.

The Buddhist instruction is not to eliminate vedanā (this is impossible and would require ceasing to be a living organism) but to notice it arising as vedanā — as a property of the mind-body-world contact, not as an inherent property of the object. This is precisely the epistemic move that interrupts affective realism: recognizing the felt quality as a property of the current body-world relation rather than of the world independently.

The second verse of the Dhammapada: "Mind is the forerunner of all actions. All deeds are led by mind, created by mind." The text is pointing at the same mechanism: perception is not a neutral readout; the mind's current state constitutes what appears.

The strain: vedanā in Buddhist psychology is part of a larger analysis of dependent origination and the arising of suffering, with a specific soteriological endpoint (liberation from craving and aversion). Affective realism is a descriptive cognitive-neuroscience concept with no normative content of its own. The Buddhist analysis is richer in what it asks of the practitioner; the neuroscience is more specific about the mechanism. As with all CB parallels: the structural overlap is real; the frameworks are not equivalent.
